Documentos and requirements

To be able to register with the Order of Biologists, you need to:

  • have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in the field of biological sciences, of which the biology content is at least half of the total study time and covers several of the levels of organisation of living matter.

In order to register, you must:

  • fill in one of the following registration forms - full member or student member
  • attach a copy of documents proving any other academic degrees held in the field, in addition to the bachelor’s or master’s degree, where appropriate
  • attach proof of your residence in Portugal
  • attach a passport-type photo.

If you want to register as a full member, you will also have to provide:

  • a copy of your qualifications certificate and a certificate/transcript of the subjects included in your bachelor’s degree.

If you want to register as a student member, you will also have to provide:

  • proof of enrolment on a bachelor’s degree in the field of biological sciences.

If you have an academic degree obtained outside the European Economic Area, you must ask the Directorate-General for Higher Education for specific recognition of foreign academic degrees and higher education diplomas or request this from a Portuguese university higher education institution.

Procedure

To register with the Order of Biologists, follow the steps below.

  1. Fill in the online form
  2. Attach to the form proof of the qualifications declared, a passport photo and proof of payment of the registration fees
  3. The Order of Biologists will examine the request and, if necessary, ask for any additional information or documents. The professional has 10 days to respond
  4. The Order of Biologists will send the payment details by email
  5. Upon receipt of payment, the Order of Biologists will issue you with a professional registration number and send it by post.

The registration fee and urgency fee must be paid at the time of registration and the membership fee will only be charged once the application has been accepted.

You can pay by bank transfer to the Order of Biologists, by Multibanco or MBway.

Reasons for refusal

?    Incorrectly completed request – failure to provide a particular form, document or other kind of information; submission of documents that are out of date or have expired, or of documents of no value; request/communication incompatible with another ongoing one.
?    Unclear request/communication – a lack of information that prevents a proper assessment of the request/communication, as a result of the way in which it is written or due to crossings-out.

Means of opposition/Complaint to the Ombudsman

Those concerned may lodge a complaint with the department that issued the decision within 15 days of being notified of that decision.

The authority has 30 days to respond to your complaint.

The decision will be suspended until the organisation responds to the complaint, provided that such suspension does not cause serious harm to the public interest.
