When presenting the vehicle for inspection, you will need to bring the following documents:

  • vehicle ownership certificate and records booklet or Single Vehicle Document (Documento Único Automóvel, DUA)
  • certificate of the most recent inspection (not applicable if first inspection).

Periodic inspections may be performed in the three months prior to the date of first registration.

Where taking a vehicle c inspection?

Periodic inspections are performed at Vehicle Technical Inspection Centres (Centros de Inspeção Técnica, CITVs). There are type A and type B CITVs:

  • Type A CITVs perform mandatory periodic inspections (inspeções periódicas obrigatórias, IPOs) on light and heavy-duty vehicles, passenger vehicles and goods vehicles.
  • Type B CITVs perform technical inspections of vehicles, including ad hoc inspections (type B). These inspections may be necessary after accidents or vehicle modification that could affect safety.

Type B inspections (ad hoc):

This type of inspection is supplementary to the mandatory periodic inspection:

  • It tests the safety conditions of a vehicle in specific situations, such as after an accident or following modifications to the vehicle that could affect safety.
  • This inspection may be required when alterations are made to the vehicle’s chassis, steering, suspension or braking.
  • It may also be required for vehicles that have been seized or require testing for compliance.

How taking a vehicle c inspection?

  1. Refer to the Institute for Mobility and Transport’s (IMT) interactive guide to find out when you should take your vehicle for inspection. You will need to state:
    1. the vehicle class; and
    2. the date of first registration of the vehicle.
  2. Choose one of the available inspection centres.
  3. Contact the inspection centre to schedule the inspection.
  4. Arrive for the inspection with your vehicle on the scheduled date, bringing the required documents with you.
