Request the old-age social pension

The old-age social pension is a monthly cash benefit paid to anyone who does not qualify for an old-age pension.

The standard age of entitlement to the old-age social pension under the general social insurance scheme is 66 years and 9 months in 2026.

Who can request the old-age social pension?

A person is entitled to an old-age social pension if, at the time of application, he or she meets the following conditions:

  • be of normal pensionable age - 66 years and 9 months in 2026
  • be a national resident in Portugal
  • to be a foreigner residing in Portugal, covered by Community Social Security regulations (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) and by international Social Security instruments in force in Portugal (Australia, Brazil, Cape Verde and Canada)
  • not be covered by any compulsory social protection scheme or by the rural transitional schemes
  • you are covered by these schemes, but do not have a sufficient contribution record to access the old age pension
  • be an old-age or survivor pensioner entitled to a pension of less than the social pension
  • have a gross monthly income equal to or less than 40% of the value of the social support index - IAS* (214,85 euros), in the case of a single person, or 60% of the IAS (322,28 euros), in the case of a couple.

What are the documents and requirements to request the old-age social pension?

Documents to be submitted:

  • Application Mod.RP5002-DGSS
  • Identification document of the applicant and spouse
  • Income declaration for IRS purposes, in case the applicant and his/her spouse are legally obliged to present it
  • Documents proving income, in case the applicant and his/her spouse are not required to submit an IRS declaration
  • IBAN proof, in case you want the payment to be made by bank transfer
  • Document proving the value of the real estate assets
  • Legal residence title, in case of refugees or stateless persons
  • Identification Form for Individuals Covered by the Social Protection System of Citizenship (Mod. RV 1017-DGSS), in case you are not registered in Social Security, together with the requested documents
  • Declaration of Disability Situation Caused by Intervention of Third Parties (Mod. RP 5074-DGSS), if applicable.
