It is an instalment to compensate the expenses with the funeral of a family member or any other individual, including the unborn, provided that the deceased resided in Portugal.

The allowance is paid in one go.

Who can request for funeral allowance from Social Security?

The individuals, who reside in Portugal or on a similar situation, who prove to have paid the funeral expenses, provided that the deceased person:

  • resided in Portugal
  • was not covered by any mandatory social protection scheme entitled to a death grant or, if covered, the amount of the grant was lower than 50% of the minimum amount established for the death grant of the general social security scheme.
