Requesting a duplicate of your driving licence

If your driving licence is lost or stolen, you can apply for a new copy, also known as a duplicate.

If your licence is in poor condition or you need to change details (for example, if you have changed your name), you will need to replace your driving licence.

What are the documents and requirements to requesting a duplicate of your driving licence?

Online, on the IMT website

On the Institute of Mobility and Land Transport (IMT) website, you will need to sign in using a Digital Mobile Key (CMD), your Citizen Card, or your taxpayer number and password from the Tax Office website.

If you do not yet have a Digital Mobile Key, find out how to activate it.

You do not need to submit any documentation.

You must submit the following documents:

  • Citizen Card

If you do not have a Citizen Card, you can use your identity card or residence permit along with your taxpayer number

What is the price to requesting a duplicate of your driving licence?

Online, on the IMT website: EUR 27, or EUR 13.50 if you are over 70 years old.

Complete your application online, access the payment area and click on ‘Finalizar’ (‘Complete’). A Multibanco reference will be generated.

You will not be able to pay using it until 24 hours later.

You will also receive the Multibanco payment details by email.

In person: EUR 30.

You can pay by Multibanco or in cash.

What is the deadline to requesting a duplicate of your driving licence?

If you apply for a duplicate of your driving licence online, you will receive it within 10 days.If you apply for a duplicate of your driving licence at an IMT service desk, you will receive it within 8 days.
