Health Emergency and Transformation Plan approved

03.06.2024

The government has approved the Health Emergency and Transformation Plan, which includes measures for various areas, including pregnancy, emergency care, family medicine and mental health. The Plan aims to implement urgent and priority measures to guarantee access to health care tailored to the needs of the population and to value health professionals.

The Plan provides for immediate measures to respond to the most urgent problems:

  • A special scheme for admitting doctors to the SNS with more than 2,200 vacancies, including around 900 for new family doctors
  • Elimination of the waiting list for surgery for cancer patients
  • Creation of a surgical program for non-oncology patients
  • Priority in the emergency room for the most serious cases and referral of the less urgent to clinical care centers
  • Monitoring and referral of pregnant women through the SOS Pregnant line
  • A system of financial incentives to increase the capacity to carry out births and reinforcement of agreements (which already exist) with the social and private sectors
  • Revision of the agreed price list for complementary means of diagnosis, in particular obstetric ultrasounds
  • Hiring 100 more psychologists for health centers
  • Creation of a Mental Health program for the Security Forces
  • Freeing up occupied hospital beds, especially for social cases.
