New identification number service for foreigners launched
News updated on 28.04.2025
Since 14 March, foreigners with an address in Portugal have been able to apply for identification numbers for foreigners, which allow them to interact with the Portuguese state. Once the numbers have been applied for and allocated, they can be consulted.
The services are available on the gov.pt portal:
- Request the tax identification, social security and national user (health) numbers for foreigners.
- View the tax, social security and National Health Service identification numbers for foreigners.
The service allows you to request tax identification numbers, social security numbers and national user numbers (health) for foreigners. These numbers are essential for living and working in Portugal.
At the moment, these identification numbers can only be requested at the counter of 12 Citizen Spots:
- Braga
- Faro
- Lisboa
- Porto
- Setúbal
Once the numbers have been requested and allocated, they can be viewed:
- Online, in the reserved area of the gov.pt portal
- On the gov.pt mobile app
- In the Citizen Spots where the request can also be made.
