New Citizen's Card has started to be issued
The new version of the Citizen's Card, with greater physical and electronic security, has been available since 11 June 2024. The new document has a new image, inspired by national symbols, as well as a larger photograph to better identify the holder.
The chip, which is now on the back of the card, has become contactless, which allows the Citizen's Card to be used in various situations, both in public services and in the private sector, without the card having to be read by a card reader. The contactless chip also makes it possible for the Citizen's Card to continue to be accepted as a travel document in European Union and Schengen countries.
These technological and physical innovations to the Citizen's Card have been made to comply with European standards, reinforcing the security of European citizens' identification documents. The Citizen Card now launched is forgery-proof, with an anti-copy background and printed elements that change colour depending on the angle or background, as well as elements that are only visible with ultraviolet light.
The card's new functionalities make it possible to develop new services, such as using the Citizen's Card as a transport ticket to travel on public transport throughout the country or to be associated with tickets to shows and electronic tickets. To enable public or private organisations to develop services around these new Citizen Card functionalities, a new software development kit (SDK) has also been launched.
Cards issued under the Porto Seguro Treaty
The citizen's card for people of Brazilian nationality, issued under the Porto Seguro Treaty, has also been updated. The new model is similar to the national citizen's card, but does not include the possibility of being used as a travelling document.
Old cards remain valid until their expiry date
Citizens who have the previous model of Citizen Card do not need to replace their identification document. Citizen cards remain valid until the expiry date on the document. The cost of renewing the Citizen's Card remains the same.
