Nationality applications can be made online or by post
In order to reduce travel and waiting times, the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) is reinforcing the fact that applications for Portuguese nationality can be made by post or online, in addition to face-to-face service at its counters.
Alternatives to face-to-face service
Applications for nationality can be made by:
- Postal mail: sending the nationality application and respective documents directly to a nationality counter. This way is also recommended for attaching documents to processes that are already underway.
- Online channel: submitting all types of nationality applications on the justica.gov.pt portal. Online applications are exclusive to agents (lawyers and solicitors).
Requests for information can be made via:
- Online consultation: allows you to check the stage of your nationality application without having to go to a counter. To clarify any doubts, the IRN provides information on how to use this service.
- Telephone line: support is available on (+351) 211 950 500, on working days, from 9am to 5pm.
Face-to-face service at the nationality offices
- There are 18 nationality offices throughout the country, with face-to-face service from 9am to 4pm.
- The service is without appointment and depends on the availability of tickets issued daily at each counter.
- In-person service at the Porto Central Archive will be temporarily suspended in order to respond to requests received by post and online.
