Almost 340,000 Portuguese already have the new Citizen Card model

13.09.2024

The new model of Citizen Card came into circulation on 11 June 2024 and has already been issued to 339,825 people. By the end of this year, a further 213,000 cards are expected to be renewed at the end of their validity period.

With a completely revamped image, inspired by Portuguese symbols, the new model of Citizen's Card has a larger photograph that allows the holder to be better identified. The card is now contactless, which allows the Citizen's Card to be used in various situations, both in public services and in the private sector, without the card having to be read by a card reader.

If you have a Citizen's Card in the previous model, you don't need to replace the identification document, as the cards remain valid until the expiry date on the document. The cost of renewing the Citizen's Card remains the same.

AMA and IRN invest in biometric kiosks

In order to make it easier to renew identification documents, the Agência para a Modernização Administrativa  (AMA), the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado  (IRN), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office (Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda) will be setting up biometric kiosks in the future.

With these self-service kiosks, it will no longer be necessary to collect biometric data when attending IRN counters in person.
