Cancelling a Citizen Card

If your Citizen Card is lost, damaged or stolen, you must cancel it.

If you are the legal representative of a person under the age of 16 or the guardian of an accompanied adult, you can also cancel their Citizen Card on their behalf.

Who can cancelling a Citizen Card?

When can you cancelling a Citizen Card?

The Citizen Card must be cancelled within 10 days after the holder becomes aware that is has been lost, damaged, stolen or unlawfully appropriated. A Citizen Card that has been cancelled cannot be reactivated. You must apply to renew your Citizen Card.

If you have a Digital Mobile Key associated with your Citizen Card, the Digital Mobile Key will remain active after you cancel your Citizen Card. The Digital Mobile Key will remain active until 30 days after the expiry date indicated on the Citizen Card.

The Digital Mobile Key remains active even after the Citizen Card has been cancelled so that, for example, you can apply to renew your Citizen Card online.

What are the documents and requirements to cancelling a Citizen Card?

If you are the cardholder (signing in)

You will need to sign in with your Digital Mobile Key (CMD) or Citizen Card.

If you do not yet have a Digital Mobile Key, find out how to activate your Digital Mobile Key.

If you want to use your Citizen Card, find out how to sign in with a Citizen Card.

If you are the cardholder (without signing in)

You will need:

  • the full number of the Citizen Card (digits and letters);
  • the card cancellation code (from the PIN card you received with the Citizen Card); and

the email address or mobile phone number registered on the Citizen Card database, to receive a confirmation code.

NB: To find out whether you have an email address and/or a mobile phone number on the Citizen Card database, contact the Citizen Card helpline at (+351) 210 990 111, on working days between 09:00 and 18:00.

If you are a legal representative (for example, for children under 16 years of age or accompanied adults)

You can sign in using:
