The request a claim for heirs can be made by:

  • the person who is the head of the couple
  • whoever legally represents the person who is the head of the couple
  • anyone acting by mandate or power of attorney on behalf of the person who is the head of the couple.

Although it is not mandatory, the process must be started by the end of the third month after the person's death.

If the process is started after that date, the Instituto dos Registo e Notariado (IRN) will inform the Finances, which will impose any fines.

How much does it cost to request a claim for heirs - inheritance?

An application for the authorisation of single heirs costs 150 euros.

When it comes to the authorisation of heirs whose owners are married to each other, 50 euros is added to the basic price.

The cost of consulting the IRN's databases (between 10 and 25 euros) can also be added to this amount.

  • Certified cheque or bank cheque payable to IRN, I.P. (in euros and drawn on an account domiciled in Portugal)
  • Postal order, in euros, in favour of IRN, I.P.
