Register a family member as an ADSE beneficiary

Spouses, descendants and ascendants of ADSE (Institute for Protection and Assistance in Illness) beneficiaries can be registered as family beneficiaries and access this healthcare subsystem.

The registration can be completed by the main beneficiary, their legal representative or the employer entity.

Who can register a family member as an ADSE beneficiary?

The registration can be completed by:

  • The employer entity of the active main beneficiary
  • The surviving beneficiary (widow or widower of the main beneficiary)
  • The retired main beneficiary
  • A legal representative 

The following people can be registered as ADSE family beneficiaries:

  • Spouse of the main beneficiary or person living with them in a de facto union
  • Surviving spouse of the main beneficiary or person who lived with them in a de facto union, meaning the person who was married to or living in a de facto union with the main beneficiary and remains alive after their death
  • Descendant (children, stepchildren or grandchildren) under 18 of the main beneficiary, their spouse or the person living with them in a de facto union
  • Descendant (children or stepchildren), aged between 18 and 26, of the main beneficiary, their spouse or the person living with them in a de facto union
  • Descendant (children or stepchildren), over 18 and incapacitated, of the main beneficiary, their spouse or the person living with them in a de facto union
  • Grandchildren, provided the main beneficiary has legal guardianship
  • Ascendant (father, mother, stepfather or stepmother) of the active main beneficiary

In the case of ascendants and descendants, it is not mandatory to live with the main beneficiary in order to be registered as a family beneficiary.

What are the documents and requirements to register a family member as an ADSE beneficiary?

Active beneficiaries can only register family members via their employer entity.

The registration request for descendants under guardianship, incapacitated descendants and ascendants of the active beneficiary must be submitted by the employer entity via “Atendimento Online” (online service desk) on the ADSE Direta portal.

Surviving beneficiaries and retired main beneficiaries can request the registration of family members at ADSE service desks, via ADSE Direta or by post.

To register family beneficiaries with ADSE, several documents must be submitted. The required documents depend on the type of family relationship and the age of the family member.

The list of required documents for each situation is available on the ADSE portal.

All documents must be in Portuguese or accompanied by a translation completed by a competent authority.

Active beneficiaries can only register family members via their employer entity.

  • Digital Mobile Key (CMD - Chave Móvel Digital)
  • Portuguese Citizen Card
  • Tax Identification Number (NIF - Número de Identificação Fiscal) and password to access the Tax and Customs Authority portal
  • Main beneficiary number and password to access the ADSE portal
