Request a duplicate vehicle registration certificate

The vehicle registration certificate (Certificado de Matrícula or Documento Único Automóvel - DUA) is the document that identifies a vehicle’s characteristics and its owner.

A duplicate certificate may be requested whenever the document is in poor condition, has been stolen or has been lost.

What are the documents and requirements to request a duplicate vehicle registration certificate?

To submit the request on the IMTonline portal, you must authenticate using one of the following methods:

  • Digital Mobile Key (Chave Móvel Digital - CMD)
  • Portuguese Citizen Card
  • Tax Identification Number (Número de Identificação Fiscal - NIF) and password for the Tax Authority portal (Portal das Finanças)

To submit the request at an IMT service counter or at a Citizen Spot that provides this service, you must present the following documents:

  • IMT Model 9 form - vehicle-related request
  • IMT Model 10 form - request for reissue of documents, including a declaration that the documents are not seized
  • Vehicle registration certificate (if in your possession, the old document must be handed in)
  • Vehicle identification document: registration booklet and title of ownership registration or registration certificate, if available (if you have the registration certificate, you must hand in the old one)
  • Tax Identification Number (Número de Identificação Fiscal - NIF)
