Who can apply for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence?
When can I apply for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence?
You can apply for the support at any time of year.
The support applies to rent paid from 1 September 2023, and will be in place until the end of 2025.
What documents are needed and what are the requirements for applying for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence?
In order to be eligible for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence, you must meet the following conditions:
- You have been placed in an educational establishment in the regions of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley or the Algarve that is more than 70 km (as the crow flies) from your usual place of residence
- You rent or sublease secondary accommodation in the area where you will be working
- Your salary bracket is between the 1st and 7th brackets of the salary scale for teaching staff up to secondary education
- You cannot combine this with the grant for teachers placed far from their usual residence
- Your debt-to-income ratio is 35% or above, i.e. you spend at least 35% of your average monthly household income on both homes – the main and the temporary one.
To calculate your average monthly household income, add up the annual income of all people living with you, divide this total by the number of people in the household and then divide the result by 12 (months of the year).
How to apply for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence?
Apply using the Directorate-General for School Administration (DGAE) SIGRHE application.
To log in, use the same login details as for other DGAE applications.
The amount received depends on:
- your average monthly income;
- charges for the primary residence (rent or mortgage payments);
- cost of the secondary accommodation (in the area of the placement).
If you already receive rent support from the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), the amount you receive from this grant is deducted from the calculation of the rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence.
