Requesting payment details for the lighthouse and buoyage fee and receiving proof of payment
The lighthouse and buoyage fee [Taxa de Farolagem e Balizagem] (TFB) applies to all national vessels with registered ownership and also to foreign vessels that use ports in Portugal.
The amount due varies according to the waterway area, the activity carried out and, where applicable, the gross tonnage (total size of the vessel in tonnes).

Who can request payment details for the lighthouse and buoyage fee and receive proof of payment?
What documents are needed and what are the requirements for requesting payment details for the lighthouse and buoyage fee and receiving proof of payment?
Payment details for the lighthouse and buoyage can be requested online via Capitania Online+, or in person.
Foreign vessel owners may only make the request online if they have a Portuguese Citizen Card or tax identification number (TIN/NIF).
To access the service online
- You will need to sign in using one of the following means of authentication:
- Tax and Customs Authority: the vessel owner’s tax identification number (TIN) and Tax Office website password
- Autenticação.gov: with a Digital Mobile Key (CMD) or Citizen Card

- You will need your login details for the Tax Office website: vessel owner’s tax identification number (TIN) and password.
To access the service in person
You will have to present a document proving ownership of the vessel.
How do I request payment details for the lighthouse and buoyage fee and receive proof of payment?
The lighthouse and buoyage fee (TFB) must be paid through the electronic one-stop shop Capitania Online +. To do so, follow the steps below.
- Go to the Capitania Online + platform
- Click on ‘Entrar’ [Log in] in the top right-hand corner and log in with the vessel owner’s login details
- Click on ‘Embarcações’ [Vessels] and select the desired vessel. The system links the owner’s TIN to the respective vessels
- Click on ‘Pagar TFB’ [Pay TFB], where you will need to confirm the vessel’s port authority registration (or reference) number. The system automatically displays the port authority with which the vessel is registered
- Click on ‘Confirmar’ [Confirm] to submit your request so that the port authority can send you the payment details
- You will receive an email with the subject ‘Pendente de pagamento’ [Payment pending] and the payment details. Alternatively, go to the personal area on the Capitania Online + platform. Click on ‘Embarcações’ [Vessels] and select the desired vessel
- Click on ‘Pagar TFB’ [Pay TFB] and check the information on the invoice
- Pay the amount specified to the entity with the reference indicated on the invoice
- Click on ‘Confirmar’ [Confirm] so that the port authority can issue proof of payment of the fee
- You can only print the lighthouse and buoyage fee proof of payment after the Maritime Authority has validated the payment
- Once you receive the email confirming validation of the fee, please return to the Capitania Online + platform, click on ‘Embarcações’ [Vessels], then on ‘Visualizar taxa’ [View fee] and print
If you choose to request payment details in person, you must go to one of the Harbour Master / Port Authority offices from Monday to Friday during opening hours.
How much is the lighthouse and buoyage fee?
The service costs between 8 euros and 70 euros, depending on the area of navigation and activity performed, and is valid for 365 days, according to the date of the first registry of the vessel.
You can consult the costs in Administrative Decree no. 506/2018, of 2 de October (fees for acts and services provided by the bodies and services of the National Maritime Authority).
After performing the service, the payment reference is available within 48 hours.
How long is the lighthouse and buoyage fee valid for?
The lighthouse and buoyage fee is valid for 12 months from the date of first registration, even if the vessel changes ownership.
In the case of foreign vessels, the fee is valid:
- for six months for vessels remaining in national territory for less than six months;
- for one year for vessels remaining in national territory for more than six months, with a fee equal to that applicable to national vessels of an equivalent classification.
