Applying for a Group II driving licence endorsement

A Group II endorsement (restriction 997) is an amendment to the driving licence, which allows vehicles requiring special care, such as ambulances, fire department vehicles and individual passenger transport vehicles (digital taxi services like Uber), etc., to be driven.

With the endorsement, the licence holder is authorised to drive this type of vehicle.

Who can applying for a Group II driving licence endorsement?

You can may apply for a Group II endorsement if:

  • you have held a Portuguese driving licence in category B for more than three years;
  • you want to drive vehicles such as ambulances, fire engines, school vehicles or passenger vehicles (including digital taxi services like Uber).

Persons holding a driving licence in category C or D are not required to apply for an endorsement, because these categories already allow you to drive vehicles covered by Group II.

When can you applying for a Group II driving licence endorsement?

At any time, provided that the driver meets the physical and mental conditions for driving the following:

  • ambulances
  • fire engines
  • patient transport vehicles
  • school transport vehicles
  • vehicles for the collective transport of children
  • rental passenger cars (taxis)
  • individual and paid passenger transport vehicles hired through an electronic platform (digital taxi services like Uber).

Physical and mental conditions are assessed through the psychological fitness certificate (CAP) and electronic medical certificate (EMA).

What are the documents and requirements to applying for a Group II driving licence endorsement?

To request the endorsement at the counter, take the following documents:

  • your driving licence
  • an identification document stating that you reside in Portugal
  • your tax identification number (TIN), more commonly known as a taxpayer number
  • a psychological fitness certificate (CAP) (you can request this certificate from a psychologist)
  • a medical certificate (it is sufficient to go to an appointment without needing the certificate, because the certificate is made available on the electronic platform for medical certificates)
