Applying for the antenatal family allowance

The antenatal family allowance is a cash benefit granted to pregnant women from the 13th week of pregnancy. The benefit is granted for six months from the month following that in which the 13th week of pregnancy falls, or until the birth.

Requirements

Pregnant women are entitled to the antenatal allowance if they meet all of the following conditions:

  • they reach the 13th week of pregnancy;
  • they are resident in Portugal (or treated as a resident);
  • the family household has a reference income equal to or less than the threshold for the fourth income bracket (check the income brackets and how to calculate the reference value);
  • any movable assets (e.g. bank accounts, shares, investment funds, etc.) they have are not worth more than 240 times the amount of the Portuguese social support index (IAS).

Documents

You will need to provide the following duly completed forms at the service desk:

  • Mod.RP 5045-DGSS (click to download the document automatically) – Application for antenatal family allowance;
  • Mod.GF44-DGSS (click to download the document automatically) – Medical certificate of stage of pregnancy.

To apply for the allowance online, you will need to sign in using one of the following means of authentication:

  • Digital Mobile Key (CMD),
  • Citizen Card,
  • your Social Security number and password.

When can I apply for the antenatal family allowance?

You can apply for the antenatal allowance from the 13th week of pregnancy.

You can also apply within six months from the month following the birth. In this case, you must apply for the antenatal family allowance together with the family allowance for children and young people. If you don’t apply within the time limit, you will lose your right to the antenatal family allowance.

 

How do I apply for the antenatal family allowance?

Online on Social Security Direct (SSD)

To apply for the allowance, follow the steps below.

  1. Log in to Social Security Direct, and click on the ‘família’ [family] menu.
  2. Choose the option ‘Gravidez’ [Pregnancy] and then ‘Abono de familia pré-natal’ [Antenatal family allowance].
  3. Click on ‘continuar para ações’ [continue for options] and then on ‘Consultar abono de família e pré-natal’ [Consult family and antenatal allowance].
  4. Click on ‘Pedir novo abono pré-natal’ [Apply for a new antenatal allowance].

Fill in and submit the form.
