Allowance assigned to the father or mother, who do not work and do not contribute for Social Security or who do not meet the conditions to be entitled to the parental allowance, for the birth of a child.

This allowance shall include the following modalities:

  • Initial parental social allowance
  • Mother's exclusive parental social allowance
  • Initial parental social allowance of one parent in case of impossibility of the other
  • Parent's initial parental allowance.

Who can requerer o subsídio social parental?

  • National or foreign, refugees and stateless citizens:
  • not covered by any mandatory social protection scheme

or

  • covered by the mandatory social protection scheme or by the voluntary social insurance scheme, whose social protection scheme integrates the possibility, not entitled to the parental allowance
  • Beneficiaries who receive an unemployment benefit or a social unemployment benefit.
     

When can you requerer o subsídio social parental?

The allowance must be requested within six months from the date of the fact which determines the protection. 

If you submit the request after this period, but still during the period in which you are entitled to receive the allowance, the days of delay won’t be paid.

What are the documents and requirements to requerer o subsídio social parental?

To be entitled to the allowance, the beneficiary must meet the following conditions:
  • Reside in Portugal or being similar to residents
  • Do not hold, as well as their household, movable heritage (bank deposits, shares, obligations, savings certificates, securities and securities units on collective investment institutions) on an amount higher than 104.582,40 € (corresponds to 240 times the amount of the social supports indexation - IAS) to the date of the request,
  • Have a monthly income, per person, of the household equal or lower than 80% of the IAS (348.61 €).
This allowance comprises the below listed modalities:
  • Initial social parental allowance
  • Exclusive mother’s inicial social parental allowance
  • Initial social parental allowance of a parent in the case of impossibility of the other
  • Exclusive father’s initial social parental allowance.
