How to register an imported vehicle?

To be able to drive a vehicle you have bought abroad legally in Portugal, you need to apply to the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT) for a Portuguese registration number. The IMT can assign registration numbers to new or used vehicles or to vehicles purchased by public auction.

These include light vehicles, mopeds and motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, heavy vehicles, trailers, agricultural tractors and industrial machinery.

What are the documents and requirements to register an imported vehicle?

To apply for registration of an imported vehicle, you must first:

  1. Applying for transfer of type approval
Request the transfer of your European licence to a national licence online on the IMT portal, or in person at an IMT service desk. You must submit the type approval certificate to the customs department of the Tax Authority (Tax Office) covering the area where you reside or where your head office is based and at a category B inspection centre if the vehicle requires an inspection.
  2. Paying the vehicle tax (ISV) and filling in the DAV
Once you have paid the ISV to the customs department, you will need the national type-approval number to complete the vehicle customs declaration (DAV) at the customs department or online, via the Customs Portal. You must pay the ISV and fill in the DAV within 20 working days from the date on which the vehicle enters Portugal.

The documents required when applying for registration of an imported vehicle depend on:

?       the type of vehicle (light passenger vehicle, heavy goods vehicle, motorcycle, etc.)

?       whether or not the vehicle has a certificate of conformity (COC)

?       whether or not it has national type approval

A COC is issued by the manufacturer and certifies that a vehicle meets all the European Union environmental and safety standards. Not all manufacturers give the COC to the vehicle owner, but they all keep a copy of the document. In order to obtain the COC, you will need to contact the national representative for the make of car you have or the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. The price and how long it will take to deliver it will depend on the manufacturer. Some allow you to order the COC online.

Type approval is the procedure by which an entity certifies that a vehicle type complies with the legal rules and technical requirements. Find out more about vehicle type approval.

When you apply for registration, you will need to submit the following documents:
